Independent Study

Independent Study

Independent Study gives students the opportunity to take ownership of their learning by working outside of the traditional classroom setting. Through guided projects, flexible pacing, and one-on-one support from teachers, students are able to explore subjects in greater depth, pursue personal interests, and develop skills that prepare them for college, careers, and lifelong learning.

Independent Study is important because it:

  • Builds responsibility and self-motivation – Students learn how to manage their time, set goals, and follow through.
  • Encourages deeper exploration – Learners can focus on topics that inspire them, going beyond the limits of standard coursework.
  • Prepares students for the future – Independent learning mirrors the kind of initiative and problem-solving expected in higher education and the workplace.

How Parents Can Support Independent Study

Parents play an important role in helping students succeed in Independent Study. Here are some ways families can provide support:

  • Create a structured environment – Setting aside a quiet space and consistent time for study helps students stay focused.
  • Encourage goal setting – Talking with your child about short- and long-term goals reinforces responsibility and motivation.
  • Check in regularly – Asking questions about progress and offering encouragement shows students that their learning matters.
  • Celebrate achievements – Recognizing effort and milestones helps build confidence and keeps students motivated.
  • Partner with teachers – Staying connected with staff ensures students get the right balance of independence and guidance.
